Amar Gaon

Amar Gaon is a café which opened in 2011 and uses the tagline ‘Authentic Bangladeshi Restaurant & Sweets’. This location was formerly home to a music shop.

The café’s owner was born in Sylhet. He arrived in Britain as a teenager in the mid-1990s through a family reunification scheme to join his father, who already lived and worked in Britain.

Amar Gaon, which always has a huge display of freshly-cooked samosas in its front window, serves traditional Sylheti-style food. The most popular dishes are fish-based, followed by lamb dishes (including brain masala), and various vegetable-based dishes. Approximately 60% of the café’s customers are Bangladeshi. Like Café Grill on the opposite side of the lane, Amar Gaon is used for political or cultural meetings by local Bangladeshi community workers and activists.

All staff who work in Amar Gaon are of Bangladeshi heritage and live in Tower Hamlets or Newham.
